Mike Hulsebus Photography and Life in Ann Arbor
These past few weeks, I've been busy with papers, portfolios, and exams,
so it's been a while since my last update. I'll start back when it was fall and By Any Means Necessary
(organization website). These are the kind of events that
we photogs love to shoot. Opinionated yelling people with signs.
A hand full of people against affirmative action showed up in counter protest. They had about
a dozen people; BAMN had over a thousand easily. In fact, the article The Daily wrote estimated that the number that BAMN
bussed in from area schools alone was over a thousand.
The NAACP later came out against BAMN for the number of young students involved. (Article).
The rally on the Diag fell on Affirmative Action Day and therefore wasn't
the only demonstration. A handful of people not associated with BAMN wore gags and didn't speak all day
to symbolize what would be lost if the University were without them
Rev. Al Sharpton showed up and delivered a speech blasting the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (organization website) for the attempt at
outlawing affirmative action.
Daily Photog Aaron Swick and myself grabbed spots standing on the hand railing once
we got the shots from in front of Sharpton
Back when it was still fall, Amber jumped off this ledge.
A couple weeks later I went with a writer to Lansing to cover some interactions
between the state reps and colleges' student governments. The event itself (article)
flopped due to poor organization and the representatives' schedules, so this is the most interesting photo from the event. The article
may not mention the poor organization, but believe me; it was poorly organized--a shame considering the student
governments from every publicly funded university were there.
This brings us into the winter photos. I think these first two
are from the first substantial snow of the year if I remember correctly. So far I don't have
much in the way of good winter photos, so these'll have to do.

Jason Avant, co-captain of the Michigan Football team, told his life story
at an event that filled up the University's largest lecture hall.

My record player that came from a thrift store
This shot of Christmas cookies (tasty ones made by residents of The Beach House I should add)
brings us up to date on general photos. In the coming days I've still got really old club softball shots, photos from
Michigan football against Indiana, and an album from the recent women's gymnastics intrasquad match, so be looking for those.
